3 Gun Rifle
Most shooters use an AR-15 for their 3 Gun rife. This is not a requirement, but it is definitely the preferred rifle because of its speed and reliability.
You DO NOT have to use a scope…in fact many shooters prefer to simply use iron sights even in some 3 Gun competitions in which there are multiple long range shots (300-600 yards).
There are often separate 3 Gun competitions called Heavy Metal that utilize a .308 for the rifle shots (and a .45 pistol and a pump shotgun). Again, most shooters will use a semiautomatic AR-15 .308 rifle for this as well.
Cost, Options, and Upgrading…
This is typically the most expensive gun in your 3 Gun arsenal and it has lots of options in regard to how you set it up. A basic AK-47 can often be purchased for under $400 and a basic AR-15 can usually be had for less than $700. On the other hand, its easy to spend more than $2,000 is you add and upgrade alof of aspects of your rifle.
When first purchasing a 3 Gun rifle its good to have a general idea of what your options are so that you can start with something that you’re likely to want to keep for a long time and that will work for the upgrades that you think you may be likely to add over the years.
A good rifle will last a very long time if well cared for and will typically hold its value as well so if at any time you decide that you want to switch rifles, you can often sell your current rifle without losing much money at all.
