For someone looking to improve his or her skills, there's no place like in competition. I appreciate that you mentioned stress. As a combat vet I know that the race against a timer is different than being shot at, but nonetheless the heat of a match is better than nothing. Getting started can feel like climbing a mountain, but getting to matches with what you got is better than always waiting. Even if competitions aren't "realistic" most competitors know they can’t be.
